In May 2016, I decided to switch jobs and took some time off in between so that was a good excuse for a little break by the beach. We couldn’t go too far away because we could only travel for 5 nights so we decided to explore Malta.

At first, our idea was to book a nice hotel, that had access to the beach, and that seemed quite central. We went for the Intercontinental in San Julian, thinking it ticked all boxes. We arrived and were very happy with the room we were given on the 14th floor, and with the service we received. You get a bit more spoilt when you book one of their Club Lounge member rooms, which gives you access to their lounge and terrace on the 15th floor, where daily breakfast, afternoon tea and aperitif are served to the small number of guests who have opted for that room type. We really enjoyed the breakfast options every morning, and the fact that we could pop up between 5:30pm and 7:30pm for drinks and delicious hot and cold snacks before dinner. The hotel had a semi-private beach a few minutes away but the bay didn’t have the clearest and most inviting water. Before travelling to Malta, we had seen lots of pictures of turquoise water and crystal clear beaches, which didn’t turn out to be the case when we arrived. So that’s when we realised that our initial plan to stay in our hotel most of the time was not going to happen…
